Before the 2016-17 season, not many knew about Mohammed Siraj. However, he quickly made a name for himself, helping Hyderabad reach the quarter-finals in the Ranji Trophy. He took an impressive 41 wickets in nine matches, making him the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Siraj, a latecomer to serious cricket in 2015, gained recognition and joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).



Despite not being very tall, Siraj's ability to generate pace and bounce caught the attention of the Sunrisers' coach, Tom Moody. He played a crucial role in the team reaching the knockout stage of the competition. Siraj's performance at the IPL auction was outstanding; he started with a base price of 20 lakhs INR but ended up with a winning bid of 2.6 crores INR. In six matches, he took 10 wickets, although he was a bit expensive.


After missing the Ranji season in 2017-18, Siraj returned for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, shining for Hyderabad. He took 23 wickets in seven games, including three 5-wicket hauls. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, he claimed 10 wickets in five games.

In the 2017 IPL auctions, Siraj was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 2.6 crores INR, impressing with his 10 wickets in six games. However, due to some inconsistencies in his bowling, he wasn't retained for the next season. Royal Challengers Bangalore recognized his talent in the 2018 auctions and secured him for 2.6 crores INR, outbidding four other franchises. Although he didn't start the first few games, he later became Virat Kohli's go-to death bowler, finishing the season with 11 scalps and securing his retention for the following edition.
