The Chairman of the Port shared, "Out of all the steamers that used to come to India from Scotland or Europe, this one is the last survivor. The others have been scrapped. So, the historical importance of this steamer is huge, and we've brought it back with the help of a private organization." This 78-year-old paddle steamer was built by Denholm & Brothers in Scotland. Before India gained independence, it served as a steamship mainly in the Bengali and Assamese regions. It was created for the India General Navigation and Railway Company.

In the past, it sailed on the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Padma rivers, carrying passengers and goods. Originally powered by coal, its engine still exists but now runs on diesel. A unique feature is the large paddlewheels on both sides, like a giant water mill, which move the steamer forward. This unique design has been preserved.

According to Chairman Binoy Kumar, "This steamer will operate every day, showcasing the Heritage Port. The private organization will bring the steamer to the 'Shyamaprasad Mukherjee' port for three days each month. We believe that this steamer will not only serve the people of this aspiring city but also become very popular among local and international tourists, playing a significant role in promoting tourism."

Apart from its historical importance, the steamer can host various events. It has a spacious deck for gatherings and a climate-controlled glass auditorium for events in any weather. Don't miss the museum onboard, providing insights into the history of India's waterways that would otherwise remain unknown.

As the Bengal Paddle Steamer starts this exciting journey, it promises to be a delightful mix of history and modernity, giving tourists a special view of India's rich maritime heritage.
